Banner Pilot-Collapser
Fat
September 1, 2009
There was a lot of hoopla about Banner Pilot that I didn't quite understand at first. I listened to Collapser, enjoying myself but not being blown away, wondering why they were being so hyped up. Then, like catching a cold overnight, they hit my pleasure spot. Their Lawrence Arms meets Jawbreaker meets Off With Their Heads (if they had a poppier sound) finally was able to seep into my pores, bringing about multiple listens and a smile to my usually stern looking face.
The hooks are out of this world, and their tempos (usually at a mid pace) give vocalist Nick the chance to shine with his scratchy voice and great ability to phrase lyrics. The music isn't mind blowingly technical, just rock and roll with a melodic punk edge, but its solid. If The Hold Steady had distant, younger and snottier cousins, it would be Banner Pilot. These guys are worth the hype that I overlooked at first.
