Having only heard their name before, hearing it often but never paying much attention, I didn't really know what to expect with The World I Want to Leave Behind. I didn't even have a starting point were I to make some sort of hypothesis about their sound. I wasn't expecting a beautiful sound full of spacey rock numbers. .Moneen. really took me by surprise with an instant gratification.
They are melodic, with songs that are super catchy, reminding me of a lot of the pop indie bands out there today, but its the space rock sound that sets them apart. I hear some Jupiter era Cave In, which I absolutely adore and can't get enough of. Everything has a very tight sound, with memorable vocal melodies that could put a smile on the surliest of faces. The choruses all have strong staying power, making .Moneen. a band that probably sounds as good live as they do on record.
I will admit that I wasn't expecting a whole lot from The World I Want to Leave Behind, but that's the beauty of music. Some bands will come out of nowhere to surprise the listener, turning heads and creating fans. I'm sure I won't be the only new fan that .Moneen. gains with this album. They've got an entire melodic listening world to conquer, something that won't be too hard given the strength of these songs.
